Context

With the rising popularity of healthy lifestyles, there is a growing trend of individuals seeking to reduce their alcohol consumption. However, many people face challenges when it comes to fully committing to these positive lifestyle choices and may benefit from additional support to enhance their commitment.

challenge

The goal of this project was to create a solution for users that want to reduce their alcohol consumption, but have never done so digitally or they were unsuccessful in trying to make this practice a daily habit. For this challenge, I did market research, UX research, and branding for a mobile application.

01 Research

The research aims to gain valuable insights into the needs, motivations, and expectations of alcohol consumers. By engaging directly with users, examining market trends, and visualizing user experiences, I strive to uncover invaluable data that will inform the development of user-centric solutions.

USER JOURNEY

I started off by surveying a group of 142 users that were alcohol consumers. I asked people about their alcohol consumption behaviour and how healthy they perceive their alcohol consumption. From my survey, I found that in general the respondents recognise their bad alcohol consumption behaviour and are willing to improve it.

Survey

44%

mentions not having a healthy
alcohol consumption

59%

is willing to improve their
alcohol consumption habits

50%

tried to change their alcohol consumption habits

43%

willing to use a tool or a system to help them reduce alcohol

Interviews

In order to gain a deeper understanding of the motivations behind respondents' desire to reduce their alcohol consumption, I conducted interviews with 8 participants. During these interviews, I specifically inquired about their experiences throughout the process of reducing their alcohol intake.

Interview insights

The participants lacked of accountability when trying to reduce alcohol consumption.

01

The primary motivations for reducing alcohol consumption are to enhance mental and physical well-being.

0 2

The second most commonly cited reason for reducing alcohol consumption is due to financial concerns.

0 3

The interviewees expressed their desire to reduce their alcohol consumption.

0 4

The participants exhibit unhealthy coping mechanisms. They often drink to cope with stress and anxiety.

0 5

The participants lack a supportive group to assist them.

0 6

USER PERSONA

Based on these valuable insights, I created a user persona to better understand and empathize with my target user. By visualizing her characteristics and goals, I could effectively develop an affinity diagram using the gathered insights. This persona served as a tool to help me define the problem at hand and craft effective "How Might We" (HMW) statements.

Alex

Account manager

Alex is a driven and ambitious young professional. Determined to make positive changes, Alex is seeking support and guidance to reduce or quit drinking and adopt healthier habits.

  • Accountability

  • Healthy coping mechanism

  • Supportive community

NEEDS

  • Improve physical and
    mental health

  • Enhance productivity

GOALS

“I tried to try to reduce my alcohol consumption many times but kept on falling into old habits.”

02
PROBLEM DEFINITION

Through the process of creating the user persona, I could develop a clearer picture of the users' needs, desires, and challenges. Based on those pain points I developed the problem statement.

Problem statement

“Alex is a young working adult, who needs a tool that helps her stay accountable to her commitment to reducing alcohol consumption because it is having an impact on her performance, health, and well-being”

How might we

01

How might we make Alex more committed to reducing alcohol consumption?

02

How might we incentivize Alex to reduce alcohol consumption?

03
Ideation

Design an onboarding flow that allows users to personalize the app with three different challenges for the user. These challenges will show up on the homepage to keep the user motivated and committed.

01

Develop a customizable homepage that prominently displays the challenge and habits.

02

Provide a section for daily check-ins that help the users track their progress and emotional state.

03

Design a section that shows the progress of the users and where the users can connect with a supportive group.

04

Based on the research, as well as the design challenge and the user stories exercise, I defined some goals and feautures here are the goals I am proposing to achieve:

Introducing Bobby, a mobile application that serves as the ultimate solution to reduce alcohol consumption. By enabling users to track their progress and providing incentivizing challenges, Bobby empowers individuals on their journey towards moderation. Users can engage in challenges alongside friends and compare their progress, fostering a sense of camaraderie and healthy competition.

TESTING & ITeRATIONS

Commencing with the design of a low-fidelity prototype, I proceeded to conduct a usability test involving 9 testers. Based on their feedback, I then continued with the development of a mid-fidelity prototype. Another round of testing was conducted to ensure the coherence and effectiveness of these mid-fidelity designs before transitioning to high-fidelity prototypes.

In response to user feedback, several key changes were implemented across the three fidelity levels of the homepage:

  • Replaced the check-in button with a prominent slider button as testers were uncertain about the meaning of the previous '+' symbol.

  • Relocated the profile icon from the navigation bar to the top of the homepage, aligning with user expectations and established design patterns.

  • Transferred the progress information to the dedicated progress page, reflecting user preferences for a streamlined home page focused on the most relevant information.

  • To improve accessibility, the slider button was replaced with a standard button. This change was made to accommodate individuals with motor skill difficulties, as sliders can pose challenges for them.

  • The date indicator was expanded to display a greater number of days. This adjustment allows users to more easily edit past days and ascertain whether a day was skipped or not. The increased visibility enables clearer tracking and management of daily progress.

  • In order to enhance user flexibility, an "Every day" button was introduced as an option. This addition allows users to conveniently modify their selection if they change their mind about their desired frequency.

  • To provide better guidance and clarity during the setup process, a page title was included. This helps users understand and track their progress through different stages, ensuring they are aware of their current setup phase.

FINAL MOCKUPS

07
Next steps

Include a progress bar on setup pages to indicate the user’s progress.

01

Further develop the Journey page that allows then user to check their daily progress.

0 2

Add a feature that calculates the budget based on the goal automatically.

0 4

Add a feature that allows the user to add a picture with check-in.

08
Learnings

This was my first solo end-to-end project, so it was a challenge not only regarding the technical aspects of the experience but also regarding time management and prioritization.

When constructing survey questions, it is crucial to ensure clarity and avoid ambiguity.

01

Spend more time on the lo-fi prototype to establish a strong foundation.

02

Devote additional time to conducting thorough disability testing.
